Lance Corporal Harry Ely

Harry Ely was born in 1887 in West Fen. He was the son of Henry and Rachel Ely. He had four brothers and eight sisters. Harry enlisted in Grimsby and served in the 5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was injured in 1917 and died in Nottingham hospital in April 1917. Harry’s grave is in Stickford churchyard north of the church. The inscription on his headstone is, ‘After being wounded in action in France he died in hospital at Nottingham 17th April 1917 aged 29 years’.
